Observation details
This bird first detected by song along West Creek, about 80-100 yd beyond junction where West Creek trail diverges from North Boundary Trail, and thus in Roosevelt NF, not RMNP. Went down slope and observed tiny dark wren in root tangles on opposite creek bank; it then flew to my side of creek, came closer (as close as 15-20 ft) on tree branches, in plain view and good diffuse light from overcast sky, and sang repeatedly. Clearly a Troglodytes wren, with very short dark rufous tail with black crossbars, dark reddish-brown upper parts (wings also barred black). Throat and breast were a bit lighter, of a deep cinnamon-buff or cinnamon-ocher color, while belly was barred dark and appeared in photos to be very dark in contrast to breast. No pale gray or whitish areas on underparts, and no pale mottling there. Only paler feature was a short dull buff supercilium, not prominent or very contrasty. Song a series of trills on different pitches, to my ear fitting Pacific better than Winter (trills mostly faster, higher-pitched and drier, less purely musical). One iPhone photo, very poor, is attached, along with two audio clips taken from iPhone video; one has a single song bout, the other two bouts. I feel confident of Pacific but of course it will be the records committee's call. Documented as of mid-July.
