Rough sketch done the day I saw the Violet-Crowned Hummingbird in Carlsbad
Observation details
This bird was discovered 3 Nov 1996 and stayed until 3 Dec 1996, feeding along with Anna's Hummingbirds on Cape Honeysuckle at the home of Frank and Betty Scheible, who graciously let birders into their home and property to see this bird. This hummer had a striking violet crown and long red decurved bill with black tip, with the body white below, with drab brownish wings and back, and with a slight greenish tail. It made loud chipping or churping fussing noises. There was a light spot near the upper bend of the wing on the left side, but this must have been a displaced feather, or some other artifact
