Observation details
Foraging over pond. Confirmed eggs in two colonies will be reported with picture of eggs in another report in the next day or two Could not clearly see two to confirm sex but could tell sex of the rest foraging over pond. Since 2006 we have expanded from the one colony everyone would come to see on Skiff mountain to three. Historic Connery Colony had 33 pairs last year and 104 nestlings banded. The added Marvelwood School Colony had 21 pairs last year and 63 nestlings banded. A third colony, the Tobin colony is a little further away from the main historic & Marvelwood colonies and had two pairs with five nestlings banded. Management and new housing have been the key, especially after PUMA detected using broken light globes to breed in on the Marvelwood campus. PUMA from both the Marvelwood and Connery Colony forage over the beaver pond/wetland between the two colonies. Photos are of some of the new houses at the Connery and Marvelwood Colony colonies. In addition to a gourd rack each colony has a Lonestar metal house. We have been working with the CT DEEP to color band the nestlings to study natal dispersal.
