Observation details
One bird well seen, The second bird was not initially ID'd to species: Heavy molt, particularly primaries and tail. Fresh scapulars and coverts are dark and cool toned, lacking pale spotting/mottling or warm tones. Bird overall a cool dark mocha brown with no striations or mottling and no warm tones. A slender, longer bill. Coloration points to juvenile Great or South Polar. Primary molt timing and bill perhaps point to South Polar over Great. Amended: With help from Dani Lopez this is a 2CY Great Skua. The retained, heavily worn juvenile feathers allow reliable aging, and the molt timing for a 2CY bird is conclusive for Great vs South Polar. Gracias Dani :)
