Notes and sketch of Chimney Swift with size comparison with nearby White-throated Swifts.
Observation details
This late date and appearance of these Chaetura swifts, feeding in air with White-throated Swifts way past the date when Vaux's would be expected tipped us off that they were very likely Chimneys. Guy pointed out fine differences in coloration and shape and flight pattern that separated this from the near identical Vaux's, the Chimney having a darker rump, a bulge near the base of the trailing edge of the wing, or a more "pinched" shape nearer the wing base, and that Chimney Swift tend to glide more than other swifts, seldom flapping, and doesnt "twinkle" like WTSW or VASW. These birds did fit these descriptions.
