Observation details
Exact count. Scanned harbor from the dog pens and counted 189, mostly loafing on a sandbar and scattered around the mudflats and far shore. There were 242 in the pond before the dog pen building, 283 in the pond beyond the buildings, and then we walked back west along the shore and counted 82 more loafing around the gravel bar near town. So the first numbers (everything except the last 82) were pretty much simultaneously from one spot, and the birds weren’t moving around much. The additional 82 were not visible from that vantage and certainly different individuals. I’m sure most observers don’t bother to count all the eiders around here, but this doesn’t seem like a very outrageous number to me. I took some cell phone photos of the ponds at the dog pens that show the masses.
