Observation details
Hybrid Red-breasted X White-breasted Nuthatch. Description based on notes taken in the field. Bird flew in to a pine tree trunk about 10 feet away from me and gave loud wha-wha-wha-wha-wha typical of Interior White-breasted Nuthatch. The size, shape, and habits resembled White-breasted. The face pattern was intermediate, with an obvious dark eyeline that tapered somewhat behind the eye, but head appeared large like White-breasted. The underparts were pale rusty, like a worn Red-breasted. I attempted photos, but the bird flushed over the hill and could not be relocated.
