Observation details
Probably the same pair seen on June 1st. Male in white "winter" plumage, aside for black retrices, red "eyebrows" and black line through the eye. A few dusky feathers visible on the crown. Timing of molt (seems pretty late) also seems to suggest Rock. Black lores indicative of Rock rather than Willow Ptarmigan. Female molted into summer plumage, overall mottled grayish-brown with golden speckling. Whitish lores and crown. Silent. Seems to be the more unusual of the two Ptarmigan species in the Barrow area.
