Media notes
Since it’s brooding season for this species, it’s likely a male. Especially considering it’s size (~9-10”) as compared with its well-developed “horn” feathers. More rufous than gray.
Observation details
When I went to investigate the cause of some agitated blue jays, I noticed droppings on the leaves of a Japanese Magnolia between 4 - 6 feet up. At about 10 ft., I noticed an Eastern Screech Owl, looking back at me with squinting eyes. It winked a couple times at us. After an hour, I returned to check on it and it was asleep.
