Observation details
Male. Small wading bird in the shallower part of the 'lake' on the public beach. New to shorebirds (and any phalarope would be a lifer), this bird initially confused me, because it was not 'spinning' as I had read about previously. But the long thin needlelike bill, long legs, slender neck, and delicate features, pointed towards Phalarope. I was not sure which species of phalarope until I got back to my car and could consult with more experienced birders. And later at home, reconfirmed in my guide books.
