NOTES: Time of day for this recording is 0000-0045 hrs. "First recording (80-116 sec [times are for field recording]) ca 200' from bedroom window in BP-2 "flat." From 210 to 1220 sec in "cut" position. From 1220 to 1410 sec was in "flat." Rest of tape in "cut." From 210 on recording was made along edge of woods/field (hay) as i followed the birds which were working their way along the edge- followed about 300'. From 1220 sec on the bird recorded was in the crown of a maple at edge, est. 75' up and 100' away. BIRDS UNSEEN. No moon. Probably a family group with possible immatures. At least one bird had song at lower pitch" - L.F. Kibler. [The first minute of this recording was not copied as it was of poor fidelity. Therefore the running time positions referred to by Kibler are no longer valid. Regardless, the recordist's running time positions provided in seconds, some at the 20:00 mark and higher, are inconsistant with the 5" field tape that has a maximum running time of 16:00. - Matt Medler] LNS: This recording was originally identified by the recordist as Aegolius acadicus. However, several knowledgeable observers subsequently listened to this recording and identified it as begging calls from juvenile Strix varia. --Matt Medler, 4 Jan 2010. Habitat: Forest, Coniferous Forest, Deciduous Forest, Rural, Field, Second-growth, Edge.
