Подробности наблюдения
A flock of 8 swifts came down to the canal to drink water as we set off in the boat, circling low over the water several times in a tight flock. Then they circled overhead briefly. Identified by shape, and speed of wingbeats. Apparently an early migrating flock heading back North from South America. the shape of these swifts is right on for Chaetura (Chimney/Vaux's) . The tails were too short and not blocky enough for Cypseloides or Streptoprocne. Wing beats were too slow for Vaux's (and Vaux's usually looks paler on throat, and also usually vocalizes, whereas these birds were silent). Thus, Chimney Swift seems to me to be the only species that fits what we saw in the field and what appears in the photo.
