Continuing bird. Pixel peepers be warned! These photos are pretty bad as the bird was quite un-cooperative (always on the ground in the dense brush), the distance was great (about 35 meters), and the lighting was poor (Juneau!). The bird was identified by sight and sound. Sound: Frequent “mew” and “chips” given while watching the bird. At one point the “mew” calls and “chips” seemed quite close and a little off to my left, but I couldn’t sight the bird while he was calling from this closer location. I’m fortunate in that this bird was a rather bright adult male (my pictures seemingly to the contrary) and all the telltale features of a Spotted Towhee are identifiable. Sight: Sparrow sized bird, rather heavy, black, sparrow shaped bill. Long dark tail with white patches on the underside. White underparts, belly, and lower breast. Black upper breast, head, and neck. Bright rufous sides. Black back and tops of wings with white spots and streaking. Red eye.
