** Rare and high count!! Found by John Sepenoski and luckily I was on the North Fork, not far from this location when I received John’s alert. An astounding 3 BARNACLE GEESE were feeding and preening tightly amongst eachother in the farm field along the east side of Roanoke Avenue, just south of Reeves Avenue. I’m fairly confident that this trio arrived as a family group as it appears we are dealing with 2 adults and 1 juvenile. These birds were easily located among the Canada Geese and at fairly close range. Separated from Canada Geese by much smaller size, blueish/gray dorsal with dark barring, extensive black neck sock continuing to breast outlining broad white face. Stubby black bill and black legs with whitish underparts. The apparent juvenile, or immature BARG, showed weaker barring on upperparts with less neatly arranged feathering and notably smudgier patterning below hind neck on upperparts. Sides and flanks also appeared slightly ‘dirtier’ than the other the two adults. Supplemental images accompany this description. Addendum (2/8/2016) - A subsequent eBird search turned up a record of 3 individuals in Broad Brook, Connecticut on January 3, 2016. Careful examination of photographs show the same birds as featured in this checklist. Here is a helpful link to a photograph containing the Connecticut birds. A distinctive feature on one of the adults was a black marking above the left eye almost connecting to it's dark hood.
