Recordist's Notes: I could see the birds in the rubble field above me but they were too far away to find with the camera, especially since they were disappearing in the rocks, which is typical foraging habitat for them. After making the two recordings I climbed up to try to get a better video/song recording but the birds flew further away and apparently stopped singing. It was also noisier up there because there was more wind and sounds from the surf, which were mostly blocked by the beach berm when I made the recordings from below. I spent two summers (July-Aug) on St. Matthew (1985 and 1986) and am very familiar with the species. However, this was the only McKay¿s I heard singing on this trip to the island. We were only there from 1-6 August so it was late in the season for singing birds. I have a number of still photos of McKay¿s that I took during this trip but none of the bird recorded singing. The male was all white except for the wingtips.
