Observasjonsdetaljer
At 2:30 pm I discovered 3 juvenile grebes (first image) in a shady flooded willow stand. Suitable water depth for submerging was actually quite limited, and there were no adult grebes present. I puzzled over whether I had juvie Pied-billed versus Least Grebes, in part because I knew the former breeds at this location and because it's been several years since Least Grebes were documented locally. I concluded they must be Least Grebes based on extremely small size, head shape, and pattern of striping on the face. I returned home to fetch my camera. Upon my return, the juvenile grebes were still present but were very shy and basically stayed submerged and/ or undetectable for half an hour while I waited. I gave up and strolled with camera and scope over to the large flooded field nearby. Several acres are currently underwater there. To my surprise, one of the first species observed was Least Grebe. I counted five adults--two together in one area and three together in another. Presumably these included the parents of the three juveniles, and that breeding occurred on the property this summer. Maybe the nest was located in the small satellite pond among the willows? Or is that some sort of nursery area for the juveniles? The adults were also wary & skittish on the open water. At least twice I saw them flying low over the water and noted the white patch in the secondaries both times.
