Note dark color underneath tail, crest, and bill shape and color
Podrobnosti k pozorování
A single crested Auklet was observed feeding with two Common Eiders from the Council Highway just outside of Nome. The photos (by Jacob Briggs) are low quality because of lighting and distance, but they show an overall dark color, small size, orange bill, and quail-like crest expected in a Crested Auklet. The overall dark color, especially on the breast, belly, sides, and below the tail eliminate Cassin’s, Parakeet, Least, and Rhinoceros Auklets. The existence of a crest eliminates all but the Whiskered Auklet. The bill size and shape eliminates Cassin’s and Least Auklets. All are out of range for the last day of November, but a Crested Auklet is much closer to its expected range than a Whiskered Auklet.
