Subject: (Interview). Subtitle: Russ Charif. Timecode In: 00:00:04. Timecode out: 00:38:47. Notes: Ivory-billed Woodpecker search; Autonomous Recording Units; Bioacoustics Research Program. Equipment Notes: Stereo=1; Neumann KMR-81. DAT #2 IBW Cornell Radio Expeditions Chris Joyce, Bill McQuay CJ-chris joyce CC-cornell guy BOY-assistant (Sweeping sound Chris and Cornell guy chatting about when things will air) 2:04 CC-So one thing I just want to, I and think you have got this. There was such a fuss with Rick Prome a few weeks ago, about you know, conclusive evidence. And being completely convinced. Because the sounds just prove everything. The release came out of the Yale ...he got religion on this and urn (changing right to left to stereo again) CC He wants us to come out and say here's the proof but that's not what we are going to do. Our quantitative test show suggest that its not just our ears and its not just a little bit of wishful thinking but based on measurements made by a computer untouched by the hands of optimistic biologists, those measurements made on unknown sound and known ivory billed and blue jays and white-chested, these known sounds are more similar to IBW than either of the two species. The caveat to this is, and the reason we're not 5:53 CC I think we started with part of the original 1935 recording, I don't know, exactly how long a piece of it I played. I think it was something like this. (Left ear) 6:00 CC Okay this is a portion of the recording made by Arthur Allen and the singer tracked in Louisiana in 1935 this is, two a pair of ivory billed at a nest and this is the only recording in existence and this is the only recording where the identity of the birds is known for 100% certainty. 6:32 CC Whoops sorry, wrong speed [6:40 to 7: 17] CC Next. .. 7:25 (cj-rustling) 7:43 (rustles sounds) CC Okay so the next thing we did was a segment of that same recording, played in the swamp in Arkansas, in January 2005 and re-recorded on an A-R-E at a distance of about opening the champagne is that we, you know we remain concern about the prospect about these tricky blue jays out there. And we'll feel a lot better about that after a few months more of recording which we will have the chance to do in November. So I just want to make sure that our somewhat more conservative, excited and optimistic yes, but somewhat more conservative take on this comes through Chris We rolling? Good. Have you settled on the kind of tight language to use on last line of paper, conclusions? CC People are working on that right now. CJ=-well I would like to call you next week and say, what's the language CC I can email you Cj-yeah, email me so I can use exact as much of the exact words. We never quote exactly but I will use the definitive words that you need me to cast. Use a yellow marker. For confidence level, 95% 98% CC We're not going there yet (laughter) So let's see if we can recreate our footsteps. 145 meters, and there is throughout this recording a high pitched wine. Which is an artifact of the recording device and has nothing to do with the bird or the forest. CC Okay. [8:16-8:55] CC I'm gonna save that exact segment as a wave file ... Cj-we're here tomorrow to about 230. (Typing sound) 145 meters, 16 bit wave ....1935... 9:45 Cj-that was 145 minutes away? CC Yes 10:02 CC Then we went okay, into 29th of January, okay, hmm, so this is one of our suspicious sounds. Recorded on an ARU on the white river, possible IBW, this is the date is jan 29th 2005, 8:50 am [10:37-10:52} CC As background to that last clip. This sizzling sound is rain falling in the swamp and Carolina wren are the two loud bird sounds ... (he's mumbling to himself to find file) 12:00 CC after that we did, then we replayed those two back to back, so you ca... (Notes truncated)
