Observation details
This bird, through binoculars appeared all black, or nearly so, with medium-gray to gray-brown remiges and rectrices with several rows of thin darker bars. The underwing coverts were entirely black. The photos revealed several other features. It had a small amount of white in the face and on the upper breast, and some light flecking elsewhere on the breast. The bird had a full crop, and when it was perched in the Joshua Tree, the wind blew the crop feathers apart revealing their white bases, which in the distance appeared to be a large white area on the upper breast. The bird is believed to be a juvenile because of the length of its tail. (Awful photos and severe cropping but good enough for ID. A.S.)
