Interesting encounter yesterday with this little one who smacked into a screened window on our deck, likely while going for a towhee or junc. Heard an odd thump, grabbed a box, ran out, saw the tiny motionless body lying on the deck, and shouted “A PYGMY!” (preceded by another word). Thought it was a tragic end. Nearly cried. Then I saw breathing. I lifted the limp body gently into the box to tote to Chintimini, pulled my phone from my pocket, and the *very second* I snapped a photo, the owl popped up and looked at me. Astonished, I dropped my phone and quickly taped the box flaps nearly shut to take the owl in anyway for an exam. Then, just as I reached to open the back door to carry the box along while I grabbed my keys, the owl BUSTED out of the TAPED box and flew into a fir. I checked the tree periodically, and by 8pm, the owl had moved on. Thank goodness the window was screened. Besides two hawk-driven birds, this is only the second life-threatening collision we’ve had since applying a mix of treatments to the windows 6 years ago. New yard bird, #106.
