**mega, first record for the NYC/Long Island region; found here less than an hour ago by Anthony Ciancimino. Hanging out on a log along the Holten Avenue side of the pond in the company of two double-cresties, viewed from the intersection of Holten and Wilbur. When I first arrived, it was curled up with its head tucked, sort of resembling a mallard or a baked dessert of some kind, but after a few minutes it lifted its head and began looking around. Later on it stood up, defecated, and started to stir and stare down into the water, as though it was considering a fishing expedition. Shortly after I left, it departed, reportedly flying out towards the bay and hooking east - perhaps towards the massive cormorant roost/waterbird colony on Hoffman Island. Another great bird visiting one of these south shore ponds, one of the most potentially productive subregions of the city and one that gets very, very little coverage.
