NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 5. Bulk reel: 197 Natural song. This is almost surely a different individual from any so far recorded and therefore this is kept although has high background insect and frog noise (which can no doubt be largely filtered out). Quality: "2." Level: +12. No parabola. 139 tape. Note that this bird sometimes seems to make the last note of the second phrase almost two-syllabled. This is especially noticeable in the first part of the recording; in the last part it is one-syllabled. Also, this bird, as others, sometimes omits the second phrase. NOTE: 14/III/72 - Can hear bird singing from my office. It's apparently behind the building. Weather fair, but windy. Bird heard at various times in AM and again ~1300hr. Especially during this latter session I noticed that it frequently omitted the normal final phrase (or else sang it so low I couldn't hear), doing so a number of times in succession. No song heard after it became cloudy. 20/V/72 - What is probably this same bird was frequently heard during March, April, and May. Also seen, both alone and with "female." The workmen reported seeing the pair with young ~May 10. This morning ~0530hr when I was @ km 15.5, I could hear a bird singing and from all I could tell it was probably this same bird, whose position would be about km 21. There is a clear "view" from where I was standing at km 15.5 to where bird probably was. (Note: It was singing there @0530hr May 18 when Collins and I were listening for P. argyrotis) and the straight line distance is probably about 3 km. This is an indication of how far these low frequency sounds travel. NOTES: a)Rancho Grande, vicinity Pica de la Toma - Practically no song heard 4/II/70 (dawn) but @ dawn of 5/II/70 heard several birds singing. b)2/III/73 - Heard one bird singing down the hill from km 23 (old).
