Seen flying in from the north along Sheepscot Bay at 13:43. Photos in flight as it flew south of Griffith's Head. The bird flew to some small, rocky islands about 1.5 miles southeast of the beach, was harrassed by two bald eagles, and then the sea eagle landed. It moved around among those small islands and was present until sunset when we had to leave because the gate was closing. The first image below is a map that shows where the bird was throughout the day on Dec. 31. Description from photos, mostly when the bird was in flight heading south past Griffith's Head: large eagle. Seen in flight with bald eagles chasing it, providing a means for direct size comparisons. Steller's was clearly larger with a larger wingspan, slower wing beats, and a longer body. Brown head; enormous bright yellow beak; extensive white on the leading edges of wings (top and bottom) that was conspicuous in flight. White tail and white feathers on the upper legs. Otherwise the body was brown. When seen perched on rocks about 1.5 miles south of Griffith's Head, with a bald eagle visible in the same field of view, the size differences were obvious. Even at that distance the dark brown body and head and white patch on the wings were visible, as were the white head and white tail of the bald eagle nearby.
