Red-eared Firetail feeding on kikuyu grass shoots. The Red-eared Firetail (Stagonopleura oculata) is the only native finch in the south-western corner of Australia. It is uncommon, and quite hard to see because it favours eucalypt forest and heath habitats with dense cover. Red-eared Firetails are mostly found in pairs, and generally forage on the ground where they eat seeds, and sometimes small insects. This bird was eating the bases of kikuyu grass leaves on a lawn at Nornalup, on the south coast of Western Australia. Elevation: 21 m. Date added to IBC: February 28, 2018.
