Second winter, photos, clearly Iceland, but primaries almost as dark as Herring, and tertials also dark, distinctly darker than back and solidly dark at base without barring. Overall color gray-brown similar to many Herring, and difficult to pick out of the flock. Not seen in flight, but wing stretch showed absence of pale mirror (also confirmed in photos), narrow dark outer webs on all outer primaries, paler inner webs, prominent dark tips on at least six outer primaries, dark secondaries and dark tail. Head and bill shape also close to Herring, on the large side for Kumliens. Overall the best fit is Thayer’s.
