Coordinates: 32.23569, -99.87958. Originally found and photographed by Elizabeth Brooks on 13 January 2024. The bird was pretty much in exactly the same spot two weeks later, suggesting it's wintering here. Flew in probably less than 100 yards to the northeast of these coordinates, in an area behind the shelters that had a low wet marshy spot with larger trees behind it. I obtained video of the bird with my phone. Brad got photos. Here's a description of what we saw. Large nuthatch; pure white on the sides of the face, throat, and breast; black eye stood out on white face; narrow black crown flaring into wider black nape; grayish-blue back and wings; black centers to tertials and wing coverts; single thin white wing bar; dingy buff flanks; rusty red on vent and adjacent flanks; white on the rest of the undertail coverts; stout bill long and upturned; short tail; distinct nuthatch behavior of creeping along and around tree trunks and branches; hung upside down on bark at times; believed to be a male due to slightly brighter plumage; believed to be the Eastern subspecies based on lighter blue tone to upperparts and high contrasting black centers to tertials and wing coverts; range also seems most likely for this subspecies. In flight: bold pattern of black and white stripes on the sides of the tail; woodpecker-like undulating style of flight. Vocalizations: typical song--a fast series of nasal piping notes on one pitch--wha, wha, wha, wha, wha, wha; call--a nasal 'yank'; calls--soft squeeks. Habitat: deciduous forest with large trees.
