An Australasian Grebe on its nest sheltering a chick under its wing. The diminutive Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae) is usually found on freshwater wetlands in Australia, New Zealand and on nearby Pacific islands. Both adults contribute to building their floating nest that is made from waterweeds and other kinds of green aquatic vegetation, often diving to harvest nest material under water. This nest is anchored to a small Flooded Gum in the shallows of Herdsman Lake in Perth, Western Australia. The sitting adult Australasian Grebe has a chick sheltering under its wing – with the chick’s head peeping out. Brown Honeyeaters can be heard calling in the background. Elevation: 7 m.
