Detalhes da observação
Starting at about 11 I began looking for the hummingbird making the Costa's call. Since we have one known hybrid who could have bred and produced additional hybrids, I made a point of studying the Anna's hummingbirds as well. Several individual hummingbirds looked unusual enough to warrant photos and comments. The first of these is a young male with long wings extending well past the end of the tail. Overall the bird's build and coloration seem consistent with Anna's, although the gorget color is rather dark. The second is a female that I would normally call an Anna's and move on, but her throat is relatively pale and lightly marked for an Anna's while her wings are essentially the same length as her tail. The throat is too heavily marked for a Costa's, however; and again, many of the physical characteristics favor Anna's. The third individual (not pictured) is another female that appears virtually identical to our resident hybrid, but has not been cooperative for photos. I have not yet obtained any documentation of this bird, but I have seen the hybrid chasing it several times and the resemblance is striking. Some views have been at very close range, and it has a cleaner and brighter breast than the previously-mentioned female I have photographed.
