Notas sobre o média

During the second 5-minute period, just after my first bout of NSWO song, something large crashed into the deciduous tree just over my head. Over the next several minutes, it apparently switched perches multiple times, with additional clattering of wings and branches. At the end of the 10-minutes, I tried spot-lighting to find the culprit, but without success. On each of three separate occasions, once I shut off the flashlight and turned away, it changed perches again (by now on the opposite side of the road, but still nearly overhead). Finally, as I was taking pictures of the aurora (but with the recorder still running), it gave a very weird hoot derived from, but different than, a typical WCFY series right at the 15-minute mark.

Detalhes da observação

At stop #1, a barred owl gave 17 very variable "who cooks for you" singlet and doublets, some without all the typical notes, fairly close by to the N in the first 5 minutes. In the second 5 minutes, another owl gave 5 typical WCFY singlets in the distance to the NE. In the 10th minute, an owl gave 2 solo long hoots to the N, which may have been the first bird (distance and direction comparable). Running Total = 2 BAOW. At stop #2, a barred owl gave 1 solo long hoot to the SW in the first minute. It may have been the bird that gave SLHs at the end of the previous stop. Running Total = 2 BAOW At stop #3, a barred owl gave a wail-n-hoot in the distance to the N in the first 30 seconds. Running Total = 4 BAOW At stop #4 (4.5), I heard three wails over 10-15 seconds. No hooting followed, and the quality of the wails was such that I wasn't sure if it had been a barred owl or a NSWO. During the second 5-minute interval, however, and right after my first bout of NSWO song, a barred owl flew up the road from the N, silhouetted against the bright green auroral sky, and perched in a deciduous tree almost directly above me. At this point, the aurora was actively pulsing across the zenith directly above the owl, but the light show did not inspire the owl to vocalize for the duration of the survey period at that stop. Running Total = 5 BAOW At stop #5 (5.0), a barred owl gave a stuttered hoot in the first minute well to the N of me. Running Total = 6 BAOW At stop #6 (5.5), a barred owl gave a series of WCFY calls well to the NE of me, seemingly N and E of the owl heard on the previous stop. Running Total = 7 BAOW At stop #8 (6.5), a barred owl gave a very distant solo short hoot to the NE from an area that was well to the N of the bird heard at the previous stop. Final Total = 8 BAOW.
