Observation details
First-winter immature mixed with the South American Terns at (-53.7448055, -67.7441736). Came flying past us right along the shoreline, then looped back and landed along the beach out of view among the gulls and terns. We had to leave at that point, so could not pursue it further. All the terns were continuing south and gathered at Punta Popper for high tide - we assume the Elegant went with them. Larger tern with thin proportions. Very thin yellow-orange bill. Black wrapping around back of head and shaggy crest. Black wash to wingtips, and thin black smudging along leading edge of upperwing. Bill too thin and body size too small for Royal Tern, plus shaggy crest. Bill color and bill shape incorrect for ‘Cayenne’ Sandwich Tern, and black color completely surrounds the eye unlike the thin white eye arcs shown on ‘Cayenne’ Sandwich Terns. Appears to be the 1st eBird record for Argentina!
