Observation details
Rare. Continuing unmistakable rail-like bird. Dark brown with white speckles near the belly. Speckled neck and head. Long and thick bill. Watched as it caught many snails. Super close looks so I could really study it’s eating habits. Rapidly shakes its head back and forth, as well as sharply jabbing down when not shaking, to free the snail inside the shell. Multiple piles of snail shells on the shore. When foraging, it had that slow namesake limp while probing the riverbed for snails. Amazing to get to see this bird up close in January in mid Michigan! Many close photos tba.
