Media notes
Styan’s Bulbul, Hengchun, Taiwan, 24 Feb. 2013. Pycnonotus taivanus is endemic to Taiwan and clearly distinguishable from Light-vented Bulbul, which also lives in Taiwan and with which Styan’s Bulbul often interbreeds. Styan’s Bulbul lacks the white spot on the nape, it has a strong black malar stripe, and it has a red dot at the base of the lower mandible. In parts of southern Taiwan, Light-vented Bulbul are nowhere to be seen; Styan’s Bulbul fills their niche (and behaves in much the same way). Craig Brelsford.
Observation details
We stopped at a park in Héngchūn (恆春) and within five minutes had photographed Styan’s Bulbul (Pycnonotus taivanus, endemic sp.). Styan’s Bulbul is distinctive. The head is more strongly marked than in the Light-vented Bulbul, there is no white “bandanna” on the rear crown, and there is an obvious red spot on the lower mandible.
