Observation details
We saw an Elanus Kite on a fence along South side and were absolutely shocked when it flew up to reveal diagnostic dark black bars across most of underwings. Circled and flew away so we ran after it but lost it, then a short time later relocated the bird and had great views both perched and in fight towards North side of reserve and along Davis Road. Showed pronounced black in front of eyes with none behind, dark grey on crown and nape and paler legs/feet than Black-Shouldered Kite, several of which it was associating with (it even had a fight with one). Also appeared slightly larger - we speculated it may be a female due to this and the dark grey on head/nape. Flight style was unique and almost appeared Tern-like. Single-note whistle calls also heard in flight. Activity of Mice was extremely high with holes everywhere and animals out and about during the day. Unbelievable experience!
