Observation details
I first heard a couple of “kweep” calls and looked up to see 3 stunning avocets flying towards me with a HERG trailing behind them. I assumed the gull was chasing them but it quickly became apparent a couple of beach treasure hunters must have flushed all 4 of them. The avocets circled around and went back down towards the main beach / swimming area and out of my view. I got to see them again on my way out and they were still there when I left. (I later found out they continued for awhile afterwards.) Good looks - gorgeous birds and my all-time favorite shorebird. Black-and-white larger shorebirds that are graceful, slender, and delicate looking. Two were still in alternate plumage with cinnamon-colored heads and necks while one was in basic plumage. Long, thin, upturned bills, blue legs. Photos.
