Remarks: These are the photos of the first ever recorded observation of this species in the wild. Although one cannot see the upperparts in these images the overall size estimated by the photographer in the field as about 13-14cm, large bill with entirely pale lower mandible, relatively long rounded tail with sharply-pointed feathers, head pattern with short whitish supercilium ending just behind the eye, large hind-claw and creamy underparts tinged with buff/brown on breast, flanks and undertail coverts all point to the identification as this species. The wing appearing to finish not far from the base of the tail would be a supporting characteristic, though hard to ascertain for certain in these images. The first and subsequent observations have shown that a distinguishing characteristic of the bird is its habit of constantly fanning its tail, somewhat in the mode of a fantail. Its call is described as similar to but softer than that of Blyth's Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum. It should be noted that Sumit K. Sen is very familiar with the bird's close relatives and confusion species Blyth's Reed Warbler and Blunt-winged Warbler Acrocephalus concinens, and it was the bird's apparently different behaviour which first attracted his and his fellow observers' Bhaskar Das, Anjan and Aranya Gupta's attention. Date added to OBI: April 16, 2007.
