Observation details
Chunky sparrows with stout bills, overall grayish plumage, yellow lores, and clasic low/weak flight style. Many singing or calling. Cayo Atascosa is known to hold probably the largest SESP population in the RGV. Individuals were counted singly on a running basis as I walked the length of the Cayo with quiet SESP tape calls playing. Usually only 1-3 birds grouped at a time, but a couple areas had 4-5 birds, probably along territory edges. Nearly all birds checked for color bands as part of a banding study, of which only 4 were observed.
