Communal Roost #1
Observation details
There are four traditional communal roosts at Garden of the Gods, used by migrant swifts. This one is on the west side of the northwest face of South Gateway Rock. My estimate of 140 individual birds is conservative. This is just a small part of the larger group exploring the roost before making an entrance. The entry process to get all the swifts into this communal roost takes at least 15 minutes. A large group flies overhead before this time, the swifts circling and passing low over the roost location from time to time.
