Observation details
This male Sooty Grouse first appeared on our property in spring 2017, and (presumably the same bird) has displayed from the same hillside each spring since (March-May), usually invisible high in a Douglas-fir tree. This morning he was apparently in a feisty mood. As I walked quietly through "his" patch of forest, the grouse started following me in the subcanopy, from tree to tree, with noisy bursts of flight. Eventually I stopped on Wills Road and he kept approaching until he was right over my head, then dropped to the ground and charged! He stalked circles around my feet for a few minutes, making an aggressive vocalization I'd never heard before, then flew back to a high perch and glared while I made my escape. What a weird bird.
