I observed a Red-tailed Hawk (who was standing on top of a vegetable garden structure covered with squash vines and bean vines) tearing at and eating a rat for at least 26 minutes. The rat's tail could be seen hanging below the foliage. The hawk was about 5 feet from me, facing away from me, the sidewalk, and the street; it seemed not to be concerned. About 6 people passed by, took pictures, and talked, which the hawk ignored. When the hawk finished eating, it flew to the corner of the structure, looked around, then stared at me and another woman for a minute. We moved further away just as another Red-tailed Hawk flew to a pole very close by. Two minutes later both hawks flew away in opposite directions. 15 minutes later, I saw the second hawk (I believe, based on the darker markings on it's belly) perched on a tall telephone pole about 30 feet from the garden. The first hawk was not in sight.
