Long-staying bird first found by Simon Buckell, though not reported on local Azores Bird News WhatsApp group since 19 September. Roosting on jetty next to Common Terns, compared to which significantly larger and bulkier with thicker black bill (especially at base), whiter head with faint streaking on hind crown and blackish marking on ear coverts. Legs black. Upperparts uniform pale grey, indicating adult. Rear end appeared ‘truncated’, suggesting it was in active moult of outer primaries, but not seen in flight or stretching wings.
