Absolutely bonkers bird and extremely exciting. As found and reported by Simon Starr. Located the bird near the original sighting (now marked as the hotspot pin), associating with flame robins. Unmistakable male with distinct red cap and breast, some record photos taken. Bizzare habitat- even seen perched among some dewy ferns, acting very nonchalant about the whole thing as if wet forest is just as comfortable as anything for it. After some research there have been historical records of red-caps in wet forest but it’s rare, potentially a standard movement between the west and east of the dividing range towards east Gippsland for some? Seen hopping along the road, perching on branches and reflector posts, catching insects in branches of trees- Actively responded to pishing and seemed curious, also seen moving between silver wattle on the west side of the road. Chances are high for a resighting tomorrow I think.
