Continuing small woodpecker with dark-barred white streak on back, head flecked with white and lightish nape. Kind of a stubby-looking bird. (Attractively stubby, of course.) Saw no yellow on the head, so presume female. Called from near the road first then called more loudly near the nest after flying in to land on a large pondi NW of the nest tree. As we watched, the bird spent a good amount of time flinging bark off. Even the stoutest call is a bit less piercing than a Hairy’s. Amanda H-P had just arrived when I got there. We stuck it out for 45 minutes and through a rain shower before getting the first glimpse.
