A very nice surprise! First county record. We had been hearing American Pipits all morning so when this one flushed and called, it immediately registered as sounding a little weird. Fortunately it landed directly in front of us where we all saw it and Scott took several photos. It flushed again and gave the same call notes. To me they sounded slightly reminiscent of the friendly chirps that House Sparrows make, only less musical and more raspy. Fortunately for us, Scott's photos show several key field marks. The legs are pale, the flanks are buffy and unstreaked, the chest has a necklace of fine steaks, the back is dark and streaked with a scaley appearance, the head is dark and streaked on top, the face is pale and buffy around a dark eye, and the bill is largely pink. Scott's photos are attached.
