Dettagli dell'osservazione
Three males, one female singing and calling at the exact spot a pair likely nested last year. This is along the social trail towards the river, at 48.8215160, -122.1793554. I saw a small warbler, mostly black with flashes of orange singing and foraging mid-canopy in cottonwoods just to the east of the coordinates above. At the same time a second male sang and chipped nearby just west of the spot. Walking south past the coordinates the trail opens up into an old wing of the river, and by walking west along that riverbed I found a chipping (and possibly singing) female - gray with yellow patches - and a third male. All three males were singing continuously as I later walked toward the river and on my walk back to the car, and could be heard well even from a distance. They seemed to prefer the line of cottonwoods along the old riverbed, making them relatively easy to spot even in the canopy. I’ll upload an audio recording of two of the redstarts. Notably about 10 minutes later by the river I heard and saw a Yellow Warbler which Merlin immediately pinged as Redstart, so I urge caution for anyone relying on Merlin for ID - it really struggles to differentiate these two species, despite the briefer, higher, and thinner song of AMRE. Just a heads up that the social trail, which begins behind the picnic table right at the parking lot, will become inaccessible in the next day or two thanks to the incoming atmospheric river, as it passes through a gully right by the parking lot that is only dry when the river is low. I was surprised to find it mostly dry today because a few days ago it was an actively flowing stream.
