Male hammering a nut that it wedged into a crook in the tree, consuming pieces that it broke off

Watched a male fly to the ground and grab what I believe is a hickory nut (some sort of chestnut-like nut), and fly to the tree from which the nut fell. It spent about 2 minutes trying to find a spot to wedge the nut into, with the first spot apparently not good enough. It found a solid spot in a crook in the branch, and spent the next 15+ minutes hammering into the nut, consuming pieces that it broke off (I had to leave at that point, the bird kept on going)
