Dettagli dell'osservazione
Juvenile uniform grey/brown coloured gull approximately same size as smaller/female HERG at same location (Muir Lake). First noticed the pale edges (chevron pattern) on the tips of the primaries when wings closed. Smaller rounded head with smaller dainty bill vs. HERG. Checked the mantle and scapulars and they appeared to be original feathers (expected Aug-Apr on first year individuals) from what I could tell at a distance. Waited for some time in hopes of checking underside and topside of wings to be sure. A BAEA came in and flushed all of the HERG and this individual moved but stayed put. I photographed the gull in flight at this point and the faded looking outer primaries (reduced pigmentation) were evident on the top of the wing while the bright silvery white on the underside of the wings was also very obvious compared to the darker grey on HERG of the same age.
