*the coolest West Indian endemic — it’s a fucking crossbill on a Caribbean island!!! After failing in the pine woods in the upper reaches of Zapotén, I was overjoyed when some persistent playback brought in a couple to the pine patch on the right side of the road just above the headquarters. Their numbers kept growing as we ate lunch — a lot of which was spent listening to the notes of two mountain endemics, Hispaniolan Crossbills and Golden Swallows, overlapping each other!
