Dettagli dell'osservazione
One apparent Herring Gull was obviously darker mantled than any others at this site. It was an adult bird with very streaked head, yellow eye, orange orbital ring, with what appeared to be an orange gape, large bill compared to Iceland or Lesser Black-backed and more like Herring. Typical YLGU seen in NL have head streaking worn away by this time and if its present , its confined to the head only. It appeared to have a shorter primary extension past the tail and deep-breasted in comparison to Herring or Lesser Black-backed. Size was very similar to other Herring Gulls in the area. Legs were obviously a dull yellow with feet yellowish pink. Very limited white on primaries feathers which is more in-keeping with LBBG. The bird was associating with other gulls, feeding and roosting, rather tame. Sought opinions from Alix d'Entremont, David Brown, Eric Mills, Rick Whitman, and Jim Edsall with photos and Diane LeBlanc while the bird was still present.
