Observed a male American Redstart in the migrant trap section of the Imperial Irrigation District Wetland Project, approximately two miles south of Niland along Highway 111. The bird was actively foraging in dense thickets high in the cottonwoods and willows along the marsh edge. Male plumage unmistakable: jet-black head, back, and breast with bright orange patches on wings, sides, and tail; belly distinctly white. Noted frequent tail-fanning and wing-flashing behavior typical of the species. The “trap” area consisted of a patchwork of dense riparian growth surrounding open water and wetland ponds—classic habitat for eastern vagrants during migration. Bird remained mostly concealed high in the foliage but afforded good views during active feeding bouts. No vocalizations were heard. Habitat supported abundant insect life and other migrating passerines.
