*quite rare for Alaska; as soon as we got out of the car first thing in the morning near the Fort Egbert cannon (where a single singing LEFL was previously documented), I immediately heard a singing individual (always nice when it works out like that). As we approached the singing bird, we heard another individual counter-singing nearby from more or less the same woodlot! One individual was a very vigorous singer and was heard singing incessantly all day long. The other only sang in the morning and evening, but was singing repeatedly at those times. I would think the more incessant singer is the one that has more recently arrived, perhaps in just the past few days. Thank you very much to the Fairbanks birders for getting word out about their nice find! Vocalizations distinguished from similar HAFL/YBFL vocals by very repetitive nature, higher pitch, less buzzy, emphatic 'che-bek!' Somewhat strong eye-ring and very short primary projection also noted. The woodlot is located just west of the aforementioned cannon and it consisted of aspens with brushy undergrowth and nearly zero spruces. Perfect LEFL habitat. Hopefully they will successfully breed here this year. Photos and recordings.
